Criteria for Grant Awards

Committed to Funding Innovative Programs in Secondary Education

The Margaret Hall Foundation, Inc. was established in July 1980 to encourage innovative programs in secondary education through grants to non-profit secondary schools. Grant awards are made by the Board of Directors in the spring of each year. All proposals meeting the following criteria will be considered.

1. Schools must be independent secondary schools (grades 9 – 12) with 501 (c) (3) status.

2. Grants are made for one or more of the following purposes:
a. Developing innovative educational programs.
b. Faculty development (not for sabbaticals).
c. Purchasing teaching materials and equipment.
d. Publishing educational information.
e. Sponsoring educational conferences and seminars in which both students and faculty actively participate.

3. Grants are NOT made to the following:
a. Scholarships.
b. Endowment funds.
c. Major capital improvements.
d. General operating funds.
e. Purchase of vehicles.
f. Salaries for teachers.
g. Associations supporting schools.
h. Multi-year projects.

4. Schools must provide matching equal to or greater than the amount requested in the grant application.

5. Schools receiving grants must submit a report on the status of the program funded by April 1 in the academic year for which the grant was awarded. Schools not complying with this criterion will not be considered for funding in subsequent years.

6. In all promotional and informative materials, schools that receive grants from the Margaret Hall Foundation must include the following phrase:

"The Margaret Hall Foundation...Committed to funding innovative programs in secondary education."

For comparable applications, preference will be given to Girls' and coeducational schools, to institutions affiliated with the Episcopal Church, and to schools located in the state of Kentucky.
